Pilgrim on a Long, Long Journey

It was about 1980. I worked for a large lab as a director. They needed an advertising picture with a doc holding a stethoscope.

As one of the few physicians in the company, I was picked as they thought I might know how to hold a stethoscope. To this day, I am still not sure what that meant since no one ever taught me how to hold a stethoscope. Shake a hand, knot a tie, yes. Hold a stethoscope, no.

They needed a jet black background for the picture. So, there was a black screen behind me. Now understand, I am 100 % Ashkenazi Jew. On the paternal side my grandparents were cousins. Small gene pool, right? Both my mom and dad before they grayed had jet black hair.

It Just Happens

That is how it happened for many of us. it was that long, melodious word, serendipity.Why then?

Why that particular person? Therapists might call it some awakening of the strengths and flaws of your folks deep in our subconscious. Sounds reasonable. but why sensed in that particular person?

Why the sparks? Robert Browning put it best for us men, ” She walks in beauty like the night, ever increasing in loveliness.” But except for a few staggering works of art beauty is different for many of us.

True love needs mystery. Why not?

It’s like the mystery of how those ants, bees and giraffes work so effectively?
