“History does influence our lives – every moment. We never sort of live our lives in a linear fashion. We always have these memories and these images from our past that sometimes were not even aware of, and they sort of shape who we are.”Dinaw Mengestu, an Ethiopian-American writer.
Oh, those memories. I managed to survive being enveloped in the 1992 LA Riots and being held at gunpoint in 1989. For whatever reason the good Lord kept me whole. I am aware I was blessed.
There must be other memories I am unaware of that continue to impact my life. I would love to dig them up to enhance my understanding. That quest is another one of life’s struggles.
Do we ever really understand ourselves? My 77 years have not brought me very far.
