The Limits of Empathy

“You could try as hard as you could to imagine someone else’s tragedy—drowning in icy waters, living in a city split by a wall—but nothing truly hurts until it happens to you.” Liane Moriarty, an Australian author

It gets me thinking about the people of Ukraine and the experience they are hurtling through. A few glimpses on a large screen thousands of miles away tell us little. A tear might trickle down your face, but it cannot compare with their terror for their lives, and the lives of their children.

At another level, I am reminded of our safety net for property, insurance. Any insurance policies my family has owned exclude acts of war.

Millions of people are on a narrow ledge. May God bless the efforts to bring the many risks, successfully, to an end for each of them.
