Gauff’s Victory over Venus

It was described as an
intriguing matchup at the time of the Wimbledon draw. Today, 15 year old Cori Gauff, a bona fide tennis prodigy, produced 18 winners and only 8 errors in an unexpected win over Venus Williams. She serves beautifully, moves well and is strong off both wings. Ms. Gauff not only defeated Venus but she did so in straight sets. When asked about her goal in the tournament she said it was to win the 2019 event.

She showed calm and raw courage throughout the match. Nicknamed Coco, she was playing on the centerpiece of 21st century tennis, center court at Wimbledon. Cori said she kept telling herself regardless of what surrounded the court, it was simply a routine sized tennis court within the lines.

I have watched televised international tennis for about 60 years and attended majors as well as Masters events. This was a milestone and Ms. Gauff is an extraordinary 15 year old. In interviews she was composed, humble and grateful to Wimbledon for giving her a wild card into the qualifying rounds. She went through those rounds easily dispatching her opposition.

Underdog enthusiast that I am, I would love to see her win this thing. I think she has an outside shot. I can tell you this: She’s got game!
